Welcome to our website
Rolesville Lightening is a recently formed track and field club established under the guidelines of the USATF (United States Association of Track & Field). This is the governing body for track and field in the U.S., which we are an organizational member. In that, all registered athletes with Rolesville Lightning will become USATF members. We function as a non-profit organization relying solely on volunteerism and donations.
Although our track club is newly developed, the association is not. Coach Hillary Leacock is Rolesville Lightning's head coach. He has over 25 years of experience both as an athlete and a Youth Track and Field Coach. Coach Leacock specializes in the sprints, long jump, high jump, proper form and technique and general conditioning. Coach Leacock attended North Carolina State and represented his Country of Trinidad and Tobago on an international level. Under his leadership are several coaches with strong history and experience in track and field that are excited to be able to extend their knowledge to potential youth members.
We are currently enrolling youth between 5 and 18 years of age for the upcoming 2017 outdoor track and field season. Coaches and parent volunteers are needed as well. If you have a few hours throughout the week to dedicate to youth enrichment please fill out our volunteer form online also. All volunteers must undergo background screenings to participate.
|When does the season begin?
The official season begins when daylight savings time adjust (March 13th) in the spring and lasts through the last day of July. In preparing for the new season, we are working out on Saturdays and Sundays. If interested, please let us know.
|What are the age requirements for participation?
Youth competitions typically take place in two-year age divisions. These age divisions provide young athletes the opportunity to compete with other athletes of similar ability. The age divisions for competition year 2017 are as follows:8 & Under (previously Sub-bantam)
9 - 10 (previously Bantam)
11 - 12 (previously Midget)
13 - 14 (previously Youth)
15 - 16 (previously Intermediate)
17 - 18 (previously Young)
* Per USATF Rule 300.1 (c) “Athletes must be at least seven (7) years of age on December 31 of the current year to compete at the Youth Athletics or Junior Olympic National Championships.”
** Athletes who are still 18 through the final day of the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships are eligible to compete in the 17-18 age division through that meet. This extended eligibility does not apply to cross country events
|Who are the coaches of Rolesville Lightning?
The volunteer coaching staff consists of diversified backgrounds in track & field. Although previous athletes, each coach must undergo supplementary training that is certified by USATF standards. The training comprises of skill level development as well as interactional functionalities for youth and adults. After an extensive background check & training, our coaches become registered with USATF.
|May I volunteer as a parent?
We welcome all volunteers. However, as a parent volunteer, you must be open to being assigned to a different age division other than that of your participating child. Your support is encouraged but to avoid bias and inequality in training, we separate parent from child. All volunteers must submit a USATF sanctioned background check.
|How often and where are competitive meets?
The number of developmental meets varies annually during the pre- Junior Olympic competition period. Meets are held on Saturdays and locations alternate between cities. Beginning in June, competitive meets are mandatory for Junior Olympic participation and will alternate weekends depending upon the season schedule. JO competitions can vary between states. A calendar of events will be provided at the beginning of the season. Parents are responsible for their child’s travel arrangements.
|How much is registration and what does it include?
Registration fees for individual youth are $225.00. Families registering multiple children from the same household will receive a multi-family discount. Fees include membership with USATF which is required in order to participate in competitions, uniforms and club fees. Payment plan arrangements may be made in advance but must be paid in full before the first day of the official practice season. Fees are non-refundable.
|My child plays another sport. Can he or she still register?
Yes. Track and field is excellent conditioning for all sports. Football players often participate in track to get an edge on stamina and development. We ask as a parent, to be mindful of scheduling conflicts that may result in an absence during the Junior Olympic competitive period.
|Why run with a track club if my child runs with their school?
We encourage you to register your child with Rolesville Lightning even if they participate in track and field at school. Not only is this a utility for supplemental training but your child will have the opportunity to compete with the best of the best from all over the state and country.
