Questions
It’s natural to have questions. We’re here to help. If you can’t find an answer to your question about our club, just contact us and we’ll be happy to answer it for you.
When does the season begin?
The official season begins the first Monday after daylight savings time adjusts (March 14th for 2022) and lasts through the end of July.
We will practice four days a week for the first few weeks of practice: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. This is our conditioning period, during which we will not be doing any work on the track.
After the first few weeks, we will practice three days per week: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
What the age requirements?
Youth competitions typically take place in two-year age divisions. These age divisions provide young athletes the opportunity to compete with other athletes of similar ability. The age divisions for competition are as follows:
-
8 & Under (previously Sub-bantam)
-
9 – 10 (previously Bantam)
-
11 – 12 (previously Midget)
-
13 – 14 (previously Youth)
-
15 – 16 (previously Intermediate)
-
17 – 18 (previously Young)
* Per USATF Rule 300.1 (c). Athletes must be at least seven (7) years of age on December 31 of the current year to compete at the Youth Athletics or Junior Olympic National Championships.
** Athletes who are still 18 through the final day of the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships are eligible to compete in the 17-18 age division through that meet. This extended eligibility does not apply to cross country events
Who are the coaches of Rolesville Lightning?
The volunteer coaching staff consists of diversified backgrounds in track & field. Although previous athletes, each coach must undergo supplementary training that is certified by USATF standards. The training comprises of skill level development as well as interactional functionalities for youth and adults. After an extensive background check & training, our coaches become registered with USATF.
May I volunteer as a parent?
We welcome all volunteers. However, as a parent volunteer, you must be open to being assigned to a different age division other than that of your participating child. Your support is encouraged but to avoid bias and inequality in training, we separate parent from child. All volunteers must submit a USATF sanctioned background check.
How often and where are competitive meets?
The number of developmental meets varies annually during the pre-Junior Olympic competition period. Meets are normally held on Saturdays and locations alternate between cities. Beginning in June, competitive meets are mandatory for Junior Olympic participation and will alternate weekends depending upon the season schedule. JO competitions can vary between states. Click here to view our calendar of events. Parents are responsible for their child’s travel arrangements.
How much is registration and what does it include?
Registration fees for individual youth are $200.00. Families registering multiple children from the same household will receive a multi-child discount. New or returning members who need a uniform will pay an additional $70. Athletes who enter the season late (due to Spring season track at their school) will also receive a rate reduction (amount TBD).
Fees include memberships with AAU and USATF (which are required in order to participate in competitions), uniforms, and club fees. Payment plan arrangements may be made in advance but must be paid in full before the first day of the official practice season. Fees are non-refundable.
My child plays another sport. Can he or she still register?
Yes, absolutely! Track and field is excellent conditioning for all sports. Football players often participate in track to get an edge on stamina and development. We ask as a parent, to be mindful of scheduling conflicts that may result in an absence during the Junior Olympic competitive period.
Why run with a track club if my child runs with their school?
We encourage you to register your child with Rolesville Lightning even if they participate in track and field at school. Not only is this a utility for supplemental training but your child will have the opportunity to compete with the best of the best from all over the state and country.
